Beekeeping Services

Here are some of the beekeeping services available.

Hive Inspection (up to three boxes/hive)

  • Inspect hive exterior, flight behaviour, pollen intake.

  • Examine brood frames to assess hive reproductive health, colony hygiene and population patterns.

  • Assess honey and pollen stores.

  • Identify signs of diseases or pests.

  • Hive Inspection Add-Ons

    • Alcohol Wash Mite Check: $8.00

    • 4th+ brood box inspection: $8.00

    • Additional honey super inspection: $5.00

    • Adding brood box/honey super: $10.00 (Plus cost of additional equipment)

  • If you have a nucleus hive, inspection fee is $26.00.

  • Inspection notes emailed to you for your record-keeping.

Alcohol Wash/Mite Check (Standalone)

  • If you need to complete a mite check to comply with your beekeeper licence, I can conduct an alcohol wash independently of a hive inspection.

  • Will include photos of the mite check results.

  • Although this service does not include a hive inspection, I will share any insights or findings I happen to notice while the hive is open.

  • I don’t do sugar shake tests. Practice shows that most bees die - slowly - after being subjected to a sugar shake. An alcohol wash is more humane as the bees die instantly. A sacrifice for the health of the colony.

Re-Queen a Colony

  • Queen replacement is recommended every two to three years or sooner if you notice issues with colony reproductive health, hygiene, aggression or honey productivity with your colony.

Colony Split

  • If you have a robust colony and a growing population, you may decide to split your colony into two and expand the size of your apiary.

  • There are several ways to conduct a colony split so before splitting your colony, we will discuss your overall goals for your apiary.

Apiary Site Inspection

  • If you would like some help deciding where to place your beehive(s) and ensure you comply with the regulations and codes, I can assess your site and provide you with a written recommendation.

Swarm Collection & Rehoming

  • After conducting a safety assessment for the swarm collection, we can discuss whether you want to keep the swarm and expand your apiary or if you want the swarm taken away.

  • Cost includes up to two trips to the site. The first trip to place the swarm cluster in a collection box. Second trip is done after dusk to ensure scouts and foragers return to the colony before removal.

Feral Hive Cut-Out

  • If I feral honey-bee or wasp colony has taken up residence on your property, I can assess the situation and make a recommendation on next steps.

  • Some feral colonies can be rehomed successfully. Others require the services of a professional pest-removal specialist. This is particularly the case if there are structural issues such as cutting holes in walls, ceilings or roofs.

Winter Pack-Down

  • Assess colony strength in late autumn. In order to survive the winter, a colony should have the following characteristics at the time of pack-down:

    • 7-8 frames full of bees. This population will generate enough heat to warm the hive during winter.

    • 4+ frames of honey.

    • 2 frames of pollen.

    • 2 frames of brood/brood comb.

  • Pack down hive to one or two boxes.
